Red Dragon Railroaders is the Wales Division of the British Region of the National Model Railroad Association NMRA (of North America)
The Cadoxton Sub-Division is synonymous with the american group of the Barry and Penarth MRC. The group's main layout, Cadoc Bluffs, normally occupies two rooms in the Barry and Penarth MRC clubrooms, although at present (Autumn 2007) it is being competely rebuilt.
The group hosts running days in the Clubrooms above the Cadoxton Conservative Club (Vere St., Barry, CF63 2HU
) on Saturdays every two months.
The running dates for 2008 are as follows:
- 19th January
- 8th March
- 10th May
- 12th July
- 13th September
- 8th November
The final date for 2007 is
10th November.
All members of the NMRA are very welcome to join us and run their own models on any of the clubs fixed layouts (9mm, 16.5mm and 32mm gauge).
Barry and Penarth's main 00-gauge layout (Holton Junction) has been built to a loading gauge suitable for running the largest american HO stock (Views of Holton Junction taken at a previous NMRA Day). Likewise the N-gauge layout Machynlleth will take most american N-gauge stock (other than double stacks) now the new spirals and extended fiddleyard are fully operational. The club has invested in the Lenz system of DCC, which is compatable with all makes of chip, (See a discussion article about DCC for more information) which is available on running days. Also, some members bring their own Digitrax system, which can be plugged into any of the running tracks. Either way, you can now run DC or DCC locos as you wish (see a statement on use of DCC elsewhere on this site).
The clubrooms are open from 11.30am until about 5.00pm. There is a small admission charge. Refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits) are available. More substantial snacks and full bar facilities are available in the Conservative Club downstairs.
A club member donated a small portable american N gauge layout, White River Pass, to the club. Work has progressed to extend this layout to a second board.
A number of North American layouts in HO belonging to individual club members are described elsewhere in this site:
- The Spokane Division of the Great Northern - a semi-portable layout, which comes alive for a month each Summer in the member's garage.
- Devil's Creek.Old time American Railroading in the foothills of the Rockies at its best.
This layout was voted best layout at the 2001 NMRA convention in Northampton.
It has also been exhibited in Germany.
A supplementary page shows the latest scenic details and backscene.
- Dunwoody a new N-gauge layout depicting an american double track main line passing station.
- Walker's Ridge A working diorama of an imaginary scene somewhere in British Colombia, built in memory of the late Capt. Bill Walker, which has now been donated to the club by its builder, Brain Scoulding
